Ukrainian officials are willing to move forward with a United States-backed peace framework that would end Kyiv’s war with Russia, despite there being unresolved key details.
The U.S. and Ukrainian negotiators held talks on the peace plan in Geneva on Sunday.
"Ukraine - after Geneva - supports the framework's essence, and some of the most sensitive issues remain as points for the discussion between presidents," a Ukrainian official said.
Officials from the U.S. and Ukraine have been trying to narrow the gaps between them to end Europe’s deadliest and most devastating conflict since World War II.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could visit the U.S. in the coming days to discuss the deal with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, according to Kyiv’s national security chief, Rustem Umerov.
In a post to Truth Social, Trump said “tremendous progress” has been made in ending the war between Ukraine and Russia over the past week.
“The original 28-Point Peace Plan, which was drafted by the United States, has been fine-tuned, with additional input from both sides, and there are only a few remaining points of disagreement,” he said.
“I look forward to hopefully meeting with President Zelenskyy and President Putin soon, but ONLY when the deal to end this War is FINAL or, in its final stages.”
Zelenskyy said support from the U.S. will be instrumental in ending the war.
“I count on continued active cooperation with the American side and President Trump,” he said.
“Much depends on the United States because it’s America's strength that Russia takes most seriously.”
