The United States and Ukraine have agreed on a refined framework for ending the war with Russia, following talks in Geneva that produced a revised version of a U.S. proposal, after an earlier version was criticised by Kyiv and several European allies as too accommodating to Moscow.
In a joint statement, both governments said they had drafted a “refined peace framework” during Sunday’s discussions in Switzerland, although neither disclosed substantive details.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his delegation was returning to Kyiv to brief him on the outcome.
U.S. President Donald Trump also hinted at potential progress, writing on Truth Social: “Is it really possible that big progress is being made in Peace Talks between Russia and Ukraine??? Don’t believe it until you see it, but something good just may be happening.”
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt acknowledged that “a couple of points of disagreement” remained, but added that “we're confident that we'll be able to work through those”.
She also said Trump “remains hopeful and optimistic that a deal can be struck” and reiterated that he wanted an agreement reached as quickly as possible.
However, she noted that no meeting was currently scheduled between Trump and Zelenskyy.
In his nightly address, Zelenskyy said the latest draft contained “correct” elements but warned that several sensitive issues would require direct discussion with the U.S. president.
The Ukrainian leader also spent much of Monday evening engaging with foreign counterparts online, thanking 13 world leaders on X in the space of an hour and posting: “Thank you for your support!”
Zelenskyy coupled his expressions of gratitude with a warning about potential Russian escalation. He wrote: “We must be cognizant that Russia will not ease its pressure on Ukraine. In these days and weeks, it is essential to take air raid alerts and all similar strike threats very seriously.”
He added: “We clearly understand whom we are dealing with, and all necessary orders have been issued within the Air Force and across all other components of Ukraine’s Defense and Security Forces. We will react.”
