United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said a meeting between Ukrainian negotiators in Geneva was probably the best so far in progressing a potential peace deal between Ukraine and Russia.
This comes after U.S. President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to say Ukraine was ungrateful for his efforts and took a hit at countries still purchasing Russian oil.
“I INHERITED A WAR THAT SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED, A WAR THAT IS A LOSER FOR EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY THE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE SO NEEDLESSLY DIED,” he posted.
“UKRAINE ‘LEADERSHIP’ HAS EXPRESSED ZERO GRATITUDE FOR OUR EFFORTS, AND EUROPE CONTINUES TO BUY OIL FROM RUSSIA.”
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took to X to refute Trump’s claims of ungratefulness.
“Everyone is offering support, giving advice, providing information — and I am grateful to each and every person who is giving this help to us, to Ukraine,” he said.
“It is important to ensure that the steps to end the war are effective, and that everything is doable.”
While Rubio said work remained to be done, including on the role of NATO and security guarantees for Ukraine, the team has narrowed down unresolved issues to a 28-point peace plan for Ukraine championed by Trump.
"So I think the takeaway from it is, I think this is a very, very meaningful, I would say, probably best meeting and day we've had so far in this entire process, going back to when we first came to office in January," Rubio told reporters.
