Spain has promised a “substantial package” for Ukraine when President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Madrid on Tuesday and met with Spanish defence sector executives.
The new package to be rolled out by Spain is worth 817 million euros (US$946 million) and will include the purchase of U.S. military equipment with 100 million euros under NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirement’s List (PURL) initiative.
Spain also provided an economic package of 200 million euros, which includes support for energy and a further 200 million euros through the SAFE instrument for joint defence efforts.
“This is substantial and sets a strong example for other European states,” Zelenskyy said on X.
“I am thankful for the new defence aid package, which includes air defence missiles.”
In February, Spain also said it would provide Ukraine with a new military aid package worth 1 billion euros as part of a 10-year bilateral security and defence agreement signed in May 2024.
This follows Spain coming under fire from NATO allies for rejecting calls by U.S. President Donald Trump for European members to raise defence spending to 5% of their GDP, despite being vocal in its support for Ukraine and participating in new NATO eastern flank defence missions.
