A two-week ceasefire agreement in the United States–Israel war with Iran has been called into question after Tehran accused Washington of violating its terms.
“The deep historical distrust we hold toward the United States stems from its repeated violations of all forms of commitments — a pattern that has regrettably been repeated once again,” Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said in a post to X.
Ghalibaf said three parts of the 10-point ceasefire proposal were violated.
The violations included Israel’s attacks on Lebanon, the entry of a drone into Iranian airspace and the denial of the Islamic Republic’s right to enrich uranium.
Ghalibaf’s statement comes less than a day after Trump said he agreed to halt attacks for two weeks in exchange for Iran allowing ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz during that period.
According to the Lebanese health ministry, at least 182 people were killed in the strikes, a number that is likely to rise, and 890 were wounded.
The attacks happened after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office denied the assertion by Pakistan, which had mediated the deal between the US and Iran, that the ceasefire covered the conflict in Lebanon.
U.S. President Donald Trump also said Lebanon were not part of the deal.
“Because of Hezbollah. They were not included in the deal. That’ll get taken care of too. It’s alright,” Trump told PBS News Hour’s Liz Landers.
Iran has also conducted retaliatory attacks in the Persian Gulf region while traffic in the Strait of Hormuz remains at a standstill.
News of the ceasefire initially sent crude oil benchmarks tumbling from US$110 to $95 per barrel.
After the ceasefire was violated, French President Emmanuel Macron told U.S. and Iranian leaders that the ceasefire should include Lebanon.
“I expressed my hope that the ceasefire will be fully respected by each of the belligerents, across all areas of confrontation, including in Lebanon,” the French president said.
“This is a necessary condition for the ceasefire to be credible and lasting.”
