Zohran Mamdani to be next mayor of NYC

Zohran Mamdani has won the New York City mayoral election, against veteran politician Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. While there were three candidates, it was widely considered a battle between Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, and the disgraced former New York governor Cuomo, who Mamdani beat in the primary as well. Despite running as a Democrat, Cuomo received endorsement from several high-profile conservatives and Republicans, including President Donald Trump, Elon Musk and Ted Cruz. Mamdani ran a campaign directly engaging with the working class and most vulnerable minority groups of the city and listening to their concerns, visiting elderly care homes, LGBTQ+ spaces and creating a steady social media presence. Amongst his promises for the city are proposals to freeze rent for New Yorkers in rent-stabilised apartments, making public buses free to ride and providing universal childcare, which he has plans for funding through a tax increase on NYC's top 1%. The voting turnout was the highest seen for a mayoral election in the city since 2001, between Michael Bloomberg and Mark Green shortly after the September 11 attacks.
