Zohran Mamdani has won the New York City mayoral election, against veteran politician Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
While there were three candidates, it was widely considered a battle between Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, and the disgraced former New York governor Cuomo, who Mamdani beat in the primary as well.
Despite running as a Democrat, Cuomo received endorsement from several high-profile conservatives and Republicans, including President Donald Trump, Elon Musk and Ted Cruz.
Mamdani ran a campaign directly engaging with the working class and most vulnerable minority groups of the city and listening to their concerns, visiting elderly care homes, LGBTQ+ spaces and creating a steady social media presence.
Amongst his promises for the city are proposals to freeze rent for New Yorkers in rent-stabilised apartments, making public buses free to ride and providing universal childcare, which he has plans for funding through a tax increase on NYC's top 1%.
The voting turnout was the highest seen for a mayoral election in the city since 2001, between Michael Bloomberg and Mark Green shortly after the September 11 attacks.
