Venture capital has led a US$3.5 billion cap raise into US-based tech business Anthropic at a US$61.5 billion post-money valuation and will rapidly expand next-gen AI systems using its newly released Claude 3.7 Sonnet.
The round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from Bessemer Venture Partners, Cisco Investments, D1 Capital Partners, Fidelity Management & Research Company, General Catalyst, Jane Street, Menlo Ventures and Salesforce Ventures, among others.
Anthropic says its next-gen AI systems using Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code will “serve as true collaborators, working alongside teams to tackle complex projects, synthesise information across fields, and help organisations achieve outsized impact”.
The Amazon-backed AI innovator says Claude 3.7 Sonnet can produce near-instant responses or extended, step-by-step thinking that is made visible to the user; and API users also have fine-grained control over how long the model can think for.
Along with the Sonnet model, the company has also introduced a command line tool for agentic coding called Claude Code. Claude Code is available as a limited research preview to enable developers to delegate substantial engineering tasks to Claude directly from their terminal.
