Google LLC, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., has committed an additional US$1 billion (A$1.59 billion) to Anthropic, a leading competitor to OpenAI, according to a report from the Financial Times on Wednesday.
This new investment brings the total funding for the artificial intelligence startup to $3 billion.
Anthropic, a significant rival to Microsoft-backed OpenAI in the AI foundation model space, has seen substantial growth. The company’s annualised revenue reached $875 million, driven by direct sales of its AI models and integrations with third-party cloud platforms, including Amazon Web Services.
The announcement coincides with heightened activity in the AI landscape, including U.S. President Donald Trump’s unveiling of “Stargate”, a $500 billion AI infrastructure initiative in collaboration with Oracle, SoftBank, and OpenAI.
Anthropic, known for its Claude AI chatbot, is positioned as a major player in the race for AI innovation, alongside competitors such as OpenAI and xAI.
