OpenAI is considering building its own social media to compete with X and Instagram, as reported by The Verge.
It’s still in the early stages and is based on the popularity of OpenAI’s newest image-generating feature, which overloaded the company’s servers.
It is unclear whether the new platform will become its own app or be integrated into ChatGPT, which became the most downloaded app globally last month.
The introduction of a new social media platform would heat up the rivalry between OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman and X owner Elon Musk. In February, Musk made an unsolicited offer to purchase OpenAI for US$97.4 billion, which Altman swiftly declined.
Musk also offers Altman competition in the AI market, including Musk’s xAI, which acquired X.
A federal district court also blocked Musk’s attempt to stop OpenAI’s transition to a for-profit company.
Last month, OpenAI raised US$40 billion at a US$300 billion valuation in the largest private tech funding round.
This will also stir up opposition with Meta, which is planning to add a social feed to its standalone app for its AI assistant. In response, Altman took to X, saying, " Okay, fine, maybe we’ll do a social app”.
