OpenAI projects that its revenue will more than triple in 2025 to reach US$12.7 billion (A$20.19 billion) as its artificial intelligence products are adopted, though it has struggled to turn a profit.
Its revenue in 2024 was US$3.7 billion, Bloomberg reported. The company also expects that revenue will continue to surge next year, potentially rising to $29.4 billion.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said this week that he would hand over the company’s daily operations to COO Brad Lightcap. “We remain focused on the same core — pursuing frontier AI research that accelerates human progress — but we now also deliver products used by hundreds of millions of people,” the company said. “As we scale, I am proud to announce three of our leaders are taking on additional responsibilities to help us deliver on this.”
The company’s valuation will also rise to US$260 billion with an investment of $40 billion from SoftBank, which was reportedly set to be finalised last month.
SoftBank’s funding would be partly allocated to the Stargate project led by OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, which aims to expand AI infrastructure in the United States.
OpenAI previously projected in September that its revenue in 2025 would be US$11.6 billion.
However, OpenAI has struggled to find profitability due to the high cost of its computing infrastructure. Altman said in January that OpenAI’s US$200 ChatGPT Pro monthly plan had been a lossmaker for the company.
The company reportedly does not expect to be cash flow positive until 2029, when its projected revenue would be above US$125 billion.
OpenAI is currently transitioning to a for-profit enterprise, but has been sued by Elon Musk to halt the process, with a trial due in December. Musk co-founded OpenAI with Altman in 2015, but has since left the company.
It also has yet to set a release date for GPT-5, a successor to its GPT-4 AI model from 2023, though it launched a preview of a GPT-4.5 model in February. OpenAI added an image generator feature to its GPT-4o model this week.
