OpenAI has introduced a new premium subscription tier for its popular chatbot ChatGPT platform priced at US$200 (A$282) per month.
The privately-owned artificial intelligence (AI) research company made the announcement in this post on X.
“Today, we’re adding ChatGPT Pro, a $200 monthly plan that enables scaled access to the best of OpenAI’s models and tools,” it said.
The plan included unlimited access to its “smartest” model, OpenAI o1, o1‑mini, GPT‑4o, Advanced Voice and o1 pro mode, which it described as a version of o1 that used more compute “to think harder and provide even better answers to the hardest problems”.
“In the future, we expect to add more powerful, compute-intensive productivity features to this plan,” OpenAI said.
ChatGPT Pro provides a way for researchers, engineers, and other individuals who use research-grade intelligence daily to accelerate their productivity and be at the cutting edge of advancements in AI.
The new tier, called ChatGPT Pro, will be in addition to OpenAI's existing subscriptions of ChatGPT Plus, Team and Enterprise and underscores the firm's ambitions to further commercialise its technology, which had kicked off the AI boom.
The represents a shift in how AI is being packaged, priced and prioritised, moving from a general consumer tool into a tiered “compute-based” service for power users and professionals.
It also expands its product range past and business plans as it seeks to deepen adoption of AI in the research and technical fields.
Anthropic, which launched Claude Code to the public in May 2025, has a similar subscription tier model with four fee levels.
