United States-based computer giant Micron has announced it will be stepping back from selling memory to consumers, pivoting to focus on AI chips instead.
In a statement, it confirmed the future of the memory side of the business would be looking towards high powered AI chips, rather than everyday consumers through their Crucial brand.
Computer memory is facing a global shortage, as the AI industry faces a huge boom and companies shift focus to that, and the building of huge data centres and chips to help power AI.
“Micron has made the difficult decision to exit the Crucial consumer business in order to improve supply and support for our larger, strategic customers in faster-growing segments,” Sumit Sadana, Micron business chief, said in a statement.
Amidst this boom, shares of Micron have gone up approximately 175% this year.
“The AI-driven growth in the data center has led to a surge in demand for memory and storage," said Sumit Sadana, EVP and Chief Business Officer at Micron.
"We would like to thank our millions of customers, hundreds of partners and all of the Micron team members who have supported the Crucial journey for the last 29 years.”
