Meta has acquired AI wearable startup company Limitless.
The deal was revealed by Limitless CEO Dan Siroker in a blog post and video.
“Meta recently announced a new vision to bring personal superintelligence to everyone and a key part of that vision is building incredible AI-enabled wearables,” he said.
“We share this vision and we'll be joining Meta to help bring our shared vision to life.”
In the blog post, Siroker also said the company will no longer sell its hardware devices, like its AI-powered pendants that record conversations, but will maintain support for existing customers for a year.
“We will continue to support existing Pendant customers for at least another year, but we'll no longer sell the Pendant to new customers,” he said.
“You'll no longer need to pay a subscription, and existing customers get the Unlimited Plan for free.”
However, other software will be wound down, including its non-pending software “Rewind”, which records users' desktop activity and turns it into a searchable record.
Over the past year, the world of AI wearables has grown, but there has still been no standout product.
One of the AI wearables that had the most traction was the Meta Ray-Ban smartglasses.
There have also been multiple pendants similar to the one sold by Limtiless, as Siroker hinted in the blog post.
“When we started Limitless five years ago, the world was very different. AI was a pipe dream to many,” he said.
“We're no longer working on a weird fringe idea. We're building a future that now seems inevitable.”
