Cognition has signed an agreement to acquire AI coding startup Windsurf.
This was announced in a blog post not long after Google poached Windsurf’s CEO, Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chaen and research leaders for US$2.4 billion.
Google’s deal occurred just hours after OpenAI’s $3 billion offer to acquire Windsurf expired, clearing the way for the AI coding startup to explore other options.
In a LinkedIn post, Windsurf CEO Jeff Wang said the previous 72 hours were the “wildest rollercoaster of [his] career” and expressed his excitement to be “joining forces” with Cognition.
“Windsurf has built the leading in-IDE agentic experience, and Cognition has pioneered the leading autonomous software agent,” he said.
“Together, we’re going to redefine the future of software development.”
While Cognition has not revealed how much they acquired Windsurf for, in the blog post, the company said Windsurf reached US$82 million in ARR, with enterprise ARR doubling quarter over quarter.
Cognition is most well-known for its AI coding agent Devin, which is designed to build software faster.
As of March, Cognition has raised hundreds of millions of dollars, valuing itself at US$4 billion, according to Bloomberg.
