CNN will lay off approximately 6% of its workforce, or about 210 employees.
CEO Mark Thompson outlined the cuts in a memo sent to employees Thursday, as part of a push toward centring digital strategy for the TV network.
Thompson placed emphasis on new roles being created in light of the layoffs to try and ensure minimal impact overall.
“I know that whatever the total number of job losses, the impact on the individuals involved can be immense,” Thompson wrote in the memo, obtained by CNBC. “The process of change is essential if we’re to thrive in the future, but I both acknowledge and regret its very real human consequences.”
The memo also announced a new weekday show line-up and plans for new subscription services, with cable networks seeing a huge loss in consumers who now flock to streaming services.
Warner Bros Discovery, who own CNN, is undertaking its own broader restructuring, reporting in December plans to split its cable TV networks from its streaming and studio operations, creating two separate units, and marking a significant shift to a constantly changing media landscape.
At the time of reporting, Warner Bros Discovery (NASDAQ: WBD) sat at US$10.28, up 2.29% from closing. Its market cap was $25.22 billion.
