In an effort to encourage donations to journalism, CNN and Reuters have instituted paywalls.
Both the Wall Street Journal ($42) and the New York Times ($27) restrict access to their content.
A monthly subscription fee of $US3.99 will be charged for CNN's journalism. CNN.com attracts 441 million unique visitors each month.
“Starting today, we are asking users in the United States to pay a small recurring fee for unlimited access to CNN.com’s world-class articles,” Alex MacCallum, CNN’s executive vice president of digital products and services, wrote in an internal memo.
In line with the New York Times, CNN, owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, uses a freemium model.
Once a free article allocation has been used, users will be prompted to pay.
According to Reuters, full access to the company's website and app will cost US$1 a week, or US$4 a month.
“This new subscription plan ensures Reuters can expand the reach of its award-winning coverage at an affordable price, while allowing us to further invest in our reporting and products for subscribers,” Reuters President Paul Bascobert said in a statement.
Reuters plans to begin rolling out the digital subscription service in Canada in early October before extending it to multiple countries in Europe, the US, and throughout the world.
