Alibaba has given people free access to its new generative AI model that is capable of creating realistic video, ramping up competition with rivals such as OpenAI.
The model is called Wan 2.1 and follows similar action from startup Deep Seek, who announced their low-cost open-source models earlier this year.
According to Alibaba, Wan 2.1 has released four variants that will generate images and videos from text and image input.
The models will be available via Alibaba Cloud’s Model Scope and Hugging Face and will be accessible to academics, researchers and commercial institutions globally.
This announcement comes as there is an ongoing debate over whether AI models will eventually be commoditised.
As of writing this, Alibaba (HKG: 9988) stocks are trading at HK$136.90, up 4.82% form the previous close of $130.60. The company's market cap is $2.78 trillion.
