Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s new TGL golf league has begun showcasing its custom-built venue this week ahead of its January debut.
TGL features six teams of four golfers, and will play a season-length competition at Florida’s newly built SoFi Center.
Samsung said today that it has partnered with TGL to provide the venue’s technology, which will include a 50-square metre simulator screen, two 100-square metre scoreboards, and movable hills.
“Samsung displays play a key role in amplifying excitement among spectators of the sport, turning every TGL match into a dynamic spectacle, comparable to other arena-based, team sports events,” said David Phelps, head of Samsung America’s Display Division.
Former world number one Justin Rose and eight-time PGA winner Billy Horschel toured the SoFi Center over the weekend. “Even I can’t miss this screen!!!” Rose said on X.
The venue reportedly cost US$50 million to construct.
Teams are based in Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, and Palm Beach, Florida. Players will include Woods, McIlroy, and Collin Morikawa.
Players will be fitted with microphones, “bringing unprecedented access to the competition for golf fans”, according to TGL.
Matches will be timed, and involve both singles and triples competitions.
TGL was originally set to begin in January 2024, though a storm damaged the SoFi Center before its completion. The league’s new start date is January 7, 2025, and matches will air on ESPN.
