China has pushed back after the U.S. added around 50 Chinese-based technology companies to its export control list.
Dozens of companies from Taiwan, Iran, Pakistan, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates were also added to the “entity list” of the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security.
The update also includes Beijing AI Academy (BAAI), which has condemned its addition to the list in a recent statement.
"Artificial intelligence is a shared resource for humanity, akin to electricity and other transformative technological advancements," the company said.
"The US decision contradicts the spirit of scientific innovation and global cooperation, severely undermining openness in AI research and development.”
China’s Foreign Ministry also spoke out and said that the addition of companies like BAAI and Wisdom Technology Co. was a means to “unjustly suppress Chinese enterprises”.
“It seriously violates international law and basic norms of international relations, severely damages the legitimate rights and interests of enterprises, and undermines the security and stability of global supply chains. China firmly opposes and strongly condemns this,” ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a routine news briefing Wednesday.
