A UK politician is calling for urgent action on deepfake sexual images being created by AI chatbot Grok, on X.
Grok is being utilised by X users to generate edited pictures of women and underaged girls to be sexualised, asking the chatbot to undress the subject of the photos or place them in sexually explicit situations and poses.
UK Technology Secretary Liz Kendall called for the platform to deal with the “absolutely appalling” issue urgently, and firmly stating that "we cannot and will not allow the proliferation of these degrading images."
Owner of X, Elon Musk, and the platform's safety team issued a statement stating that “anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content.”
“We take action against illegal content on X, including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), by removing it, permanently suspending accounts, and working with local governments and law enforcement as necessary.”
British regulator, Ofcom, also confirmed earlier in the week that it had made "urgent contact" with X and xAi, and would be undertaking a “swift assesment” of their compliance.
"It is absolutely right that Ofcom is looking into this as a matter of urgency and it has my full backing to take any enforcement action it deems necessary," Kendall said, backing the regulator's move.
