Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with United States President-elect Donald Trump on Friday after Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports.
Trudeau and Trump discussed border security, drug policy, and trade over dinner at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.
“I made it very clear that the United States will no longer sit idly by as our Citizens become victims to the scourge of this Drug Epidemic, caused mainly by the Drug Cartels, and Fentanyl pouring in from China,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“Prime Minister Trudeau has made a commitment to work with us to end this terrible devastation of U.S. Families.”
Trump said last week that he would impose major tariffs on Mexico and Canada. He and Trudeau also spoke by phone after the announcement.
“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” Trump posted on Truth Social last week.
“Our responsibility is to point out that in this way, he would actually not just be harming Canadians, who work so well with the United States, he would actually be raising prices for American citizens as well, and hurting American industry and businesses,” Trudeau said of the tariffs after the meeting.
Several of Trump’s intended cabinet secretaries attended the meeting with Trudeau, including his choices for Secretary of the Interior, National Security Advisor, and Commerce Secretary.
Trump spoke to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday, although Sheinbaum said the two leaders did not discuss Trump’s planned tariffs.
“We discussed Mexico’s strategy on the migration phenomenon, and I shared that caravans are not arriving at the northern border because they are being taken care of in Mexico,” she said.
