Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum denies claims made by US President-elect Donald Trump that Mexico will shut its border with America.
Sheinbaum disputed these claims posting to X that she and Trump discussed a comprehensive strategy that Mexico has followed to address the migration phenomenon and said she has no intention of shutting the border.
“Thanks to this, migrants and caravans are cared for before they arrive at the border,” she posted.
“We reiterate that Mexico's position is not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and between peoples.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump claims to have had a productive conversation where they discussed the closure of the border between the US and Mexico with the Mexican President.
“She (Sheinbaum) has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border,” he posted.
“We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United States, and also, U.S. consumption of these drugs. It was a very productive conversation!”
Sheinbaum and Trump’s remarks come after Trump promised to instate massive hikes of tariffs on goods coming from Mexico, Canada and China on his first day as president.
In an earlier Truth Social post, Trump said he will charge a 25% on all goods coming from Mexico and Canada, with China expected to face even higher tariffs.
“Right now a Caravan coming from Mexico, composed of thousands of people, seems to be unstoppable in its quest to come through our currently Open Border,” he posted.
“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States and its ridiculous Open Borders.
“Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long-simmering problem.
“We hereby demand that they use this power, and until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price!”
Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc issued a joint statement to X and said Canada has always had a strong relationship with the U.S. and has always worked with US law enforcement agencies to ensure the border is safe.
“Canada places high priority on border security and the integrity of our shared border,” the statement said.
“We will of course continue to discuss these issues with the incoming administration.”
