Donald J. Trump has officially assumed office as the 47th president of the United States, becoming only the second individual in American history to be elected for two non-consecutive terms.
The inauguration ceremony took place in Washington, D.C., with Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts administering the oath of office. Vice President JD Vance was also sworn in by Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Shortly before President Trump’s swearing-in, outgoing President Joe Biden issued a blanket pardon covering several members of his family, including his brother James Biden, James' wife Sara, sister Valerie Biden Owens, her husband John Owens, and his brother Francis Biden. Former President Biden and Jill Biden left the U.S. Capitol in a helicopter after Trump’s inaugural speech.
“The golden age of America begins right now,” President Trump said in his inaugural address on Monday.
“From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world. We will be the envy of every nation, and we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer. During every single day of the Trump administration, I will very simply put America first,” he added.
“America will be respected again and admired again, including by people of religion, faith and good will. We will be prosperous,” Trump said.
“We will be proud. We will be strong and we will win like never before. We will not be conquered. We will not be intimidated. We will not be broken. And we will not fail. From this day on, the United States of America will be a free, sovereign and independent nation,” he said.

President Trump is expected to sign a series of executive orders later in the day, aligning with his campaign promises. These actions will likely include declaring a national emergency at the U.S. southern border to address immigration concerns and implementing measures to enhance U.S. energy production.
The new president also issued several proclamations immediately following his swearing-in. He approved 22 Cabinet-level appointments and 93 additional executive positions. A notable proclamation included an order for flags to be flown at full staff during all future inauguration days, reversing the current half-staff position that honoured former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on 29 December.
U.S. stock futures were higher as Trump was sworn in.
