United States President Donald Trump has called for an end to all trade with Spain during a meeting with NATO's Secretary General.
Secretary General Mark Rutte was one of many NATO leaders gathered in Ankara, Turkiye, for a summit.
Spain is the only member nation that did not commit to an increase in military spending, equivalent to 5% of GDP, last year, with tension continuing to rise between them and the U.S. since.
Instead, it saw a more marginal increase from 1.4% in 2021 to 2.1% last year.
"Spain is a terrible partner in NATO. They don’t participate. They don’t pay,” Trump said at a news conference during the summit.
“I don’t want anything to do with Spain. Cut off all trade with Spain.”
Rutte intervened, reminding Trump that he had already “got Spain to pay 2%”.
"They spent, they made a huge step last year,” he added.
