A young thoroughbred horse has set a new sale record, selling for $2.8 million.
English businessman Phil Cunningham snapped up the colt on day three of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, marking a successful first trip to Australia .
The colt, presented by the Hunter Valley's Widden Stud, is the most expensive horse ever sold at the Sale and will commence training in the coming months to begin its racing career.
Widden Stud owner Antony Thompson said it was a special moment for the whole team.
"We knew we had a lovely horse on our hands… but to see him sell for a record price at the Magic Millions of $2.8 million was really stunning and quite humbling."
The colt's mother Humma Humma was a "fast mare" on the track before starting a broodmare career and the father, Snitzel, is one of Australia's top stallions, with a service fee of almost $250,000
Meanwhile, the 2021 European Horse of the Year St Mark’s Basilica, who had his own line of yearlings being offered at Magic Millions this week, sold for $700,000.
