Russia and Ukraine will immediately begin ceasefire negotiations, United States President Donald Trump said after a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump and Putin spoke for two hours, alongside U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Trump said he had relayed Russia’s ceasefire negotiation plan to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as leaders from the European Union, France, Italy, Germany, and Finland.
“Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War,” wrote Trump on his social network Truth Social. “The conditions for that will be negotiated between the two parties, as it can only be, because they know details of a negotiation that nobody else would be aware of.”
“We have agreed with the president of the United States that Russia will propose and is ready to work with the Ukrainian side on a memorandum on a possible future peace accord,” said Putin. The two leaders did not discuss a timeframe for a ceasefire to begin, per Russian foreign policy officials.
Zelenskyy said today that Ukraine has been considering a high-level meeting between representatives from Ukraine, Russia, the U.S., the E.U., and the United Kingdom, which could be hosted by Türkiye, Switzerland, or the Vatican. “I asked him [Trump] not to make any decisions about Ukraine without us before his conversation with Putin,” said Zelenskyy.
According to Trump, the Vatican is interested in hosting peace talks.
Zelenskyy and other European leaders supported plans for an immediate 30-day ceasefire earlier this month, with Zelenskyy inviting Putin to personally negotiate in Türkiye. Putin declined to attend, instead sending a Russian delegation led by aide Vladimir Medinsky.
Trump also wrote on Truth Social that he hopes Russia and the U.S. will engage in “largescale trade” once Russia’s invasion of Ukraine ends.
