At the same time United States President Donald Trump is preparing for peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, his secretary of state, Marco Rubio is suggesting the Vatican for future discussions on the Russia-Ukraine war.
Recently Trump took to his social network Truth Social and said he would be speaking to Putin regarding the “bloodbath”, followed by talks with other world leaders, including Ukraine President Volodymry Zelenskyy.
“THE SUBJECTS OF THE CALL WILL BE, STOPPING THE “BLOODBATH” THAT IS KILLING, ON AVERAGE, MORE THAN 5000 RUSSIAN AND UKRAINIAN SOLDIERS A WEEK, AND TRADE,” he said.
“HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE A PRODUCTIVE DAY, A CEASEFIRE WILL TAKE PLACE, AND THIS VERY VIOLENT WAR, A WAR THAT SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED, WILL END.”
This comes as the Vatican becomes a possibility for future peace talks over the war.
“I wouldn’t call it broker, but it’s certainly — I think it’s a place that both sides would be comfortable going,” Rubio said.
“So we’ll talk about all of that and obviously always grateful to the Vatican for their willingness to play this constructive and positive role.”
After Putin’s no-show to the Turkey peace talks that he suggested, the Vatican called the outcome tragic and said Pope Leo XIV wants to make the Vatican an available host spot for the two sides to meet and end the war.
Pope Leo even called for peace in his first ever X post as pope.
“I would like this greeting of peace to resound in your hearts, in your families, and among all people, wherever they may be, in every nation and throughout the world,” he said.
Zelenskyy and Pope Leo also met at his inaugural mass. Zelenskyy took to X to thank Leo for his willingness to serve as a platform for direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
“The authority and voice of the Holy See can play an important role in bringing this war to an end,” he posted.
“We are ready for dialogue in any format for the sake of tangible results.
“We appreciate the support for Ukraine and the clear voice in defence of a just and lasting peace.”
