Emirates Team New Zealand won the America’s Cup on Sunday, notching their third consecutive victory in the sailing race.
New Zealand won the match 7-2, defeating the United Kingdom’s INEOS Britannia.
“Just to see it all come together in such a tight race like today, to be able to get another win on the board, ground out that match point – it’s something we’re incredibly proud of,” said New Zealand skipper Peter Burling.
The America’s Cup took place in Barcelona this year, its first time in the city. It is the oldest international sporting competition.
New Zealand confirmed it has accepted a challenge for the next edition of the race, but did not disclose which team had issued the challenge or where it will be held.
Before the race, the America’s Cup was projected to bring in EU€1 billion for the city of Barcelona, and attract 2.5 million tourists to the city.
The America’s Cup title sponsor is Louis Vuitton. While this is its first race as title sponsor, it began sponsoring a challengers’ series in 1983.
Several other luxury companies have partnered with the race this year, including Omega, its official timekeeper. L’Oréal and Prada sponsored French and Italian teams, respectively.
Puig, a Barcelona-based fashion company, is the race’s global partner.
LVMH’s (MC) share price closed at EU€623.20 on Friday, up from the previous day’s €609.40. Its market cap is €311.9 billion.
