Meta has partnered with generative artificial intelligence lab Midjourney to license the startup’s AI image and video generation technology, according to Meta Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang.
Wang said the Meta research teams will collaborate with Midjourney to bring its technology into future AI models and products.
“To ensure Meta is able to deliver the best possible products for people, it will require taking an all-of-the-above approach,” Wang said.
“This means world-class talent, an ambitious compute roadmap, and working with the best players across the industry.”
While details of the deal are unknown, Midjourney CEO David Holz posted to X that the company remains independent.
“We remain an independent, community-backed research lab, with no investors, working on a staggering array of ambitious projects focused on bringing about humane futures where we are all mid-journey,” he said.
This move signals Meta’s push to enter the AI race amid competition with rivals OpenAI and Google. It also follows the company striking a cloud computing deal with Google worth at least US$10 million.
Earlier this year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also went on an AI hiring spree, offering some researchers packages upwards of US$100 million.
The social media giant also invested US$14 billion (A$21.79 billion) in Scale AI and acquired the AI startup Play AI.
