Iran has threatened to escalate strikes on energy infrastructure and target critical water desalination facilities if United States President Donald Trump follows through on its ultimatum.
This comes after Trump said he would attack Iran’s power plants if the country didn’t open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, as the war enters its fourth week.
“If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST,” Trump said in a post to Truth Social.
In response, Iran said it would attack U.S. infrastructure, including energy facilities in the Gulf, if Trump carried out his threat, which he made as U.S. Marines and heavy landing craft continued to head to the region.
Tehran would likely strike energy facilities in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, which could deepen and prolong the pain of higher energy prices, according to Reuters.
Around 20% of the world’s oil travels through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been blocked since the war began, causing oil prices to soar.
