Iran’s foreign minister said the country “does not intend” to negotiate with the United States, as a source confirms that Iran received the 15-point plan from U.S. President Donald Trump.
A source told Al Jazeera that Tehran described the U.S. proposal as “extremely maximalist and unreasonable”.
“It is not beautiful, even on paper,” the source added, calling the plan deceptive and misleading in its presentation.
This comes as Trump claims that “productive” negotiations have been underway between the two countries, despite denials from Iranian officials.
The war started almost a month ago on 28 February.
The Al Jazeera source said Iran has a clear understanding of what conditions it requires for a ceasefire and which it would reject.
It also said there haven’t been any direct talks between the U.S. and Iran, but that there have been messages exchanged through a number of mediators.
Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, confirmed that there have been no direct negotiations and that Iran wants a permanent end to the war.
He also said Iran is seeking compensation for the destruction caused by weeks of U.S.-Israeli attacks against the country.
An official told the Iranian English-language broadcaster, Press TV, that Iran has countered the 15-point plan with its own five-point plan.
“Iran will end the war when it decides to do so and when its own conditions are met,” Press TV quoted the official as saying.
The five-point plan consisted of a halt to the killing of its officials, the means to ensure no other war is waged against it, reparations for the war, the end of hostilities and Iran’s “exercise of sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz”.
Officials said the 15-point plan from the U.S. mainly consisted of a rollback of Iran’s nuclear program, limits on its missiles and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s rejection of the U.S. proposal came as Israel launched air attacks on Tehran and Washington deployed paratroopers and more Marines to the region.
