Household spending rose 0.4% in November 2024, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
This follows a 0.9% rise in October and a 0.2% fall in September.
In November, household spending rose in six out of nine categories, with the greatest increase in recreation and culture (0.9%)
ABS head of business statistics, Robert Ewing, attributes much of this growth to the Black Friday sales.
“Spending in cinemas continued to grow strongly, with major releases such as Wicked, Gladiator II and Moana 2 all opening in November,” he said.
“Spending on clothing and footwear and furnishings and household equipment also rose by 1.8% and 0.8% respectively.”
Spending on new vehicles also contributed to the rise.
“Strength in new vehicle purchases also contributed to higher discretionary spending, with the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries reporting a notable rise in SUV sales in November,” Ewing said.
Spending also rose in most states and territories, with the strongest increases in Queensland (0.7%), and Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia (0.5%).
From November 2023, household spending climbed 2.4%. All states and territories experienced an increase, with Western Australia (5.9%), Queensland (3.9%) and the Northern Territory (2.3%) having the strongest growth for the year.
