Google DeepMind has confirmed plans to construct an automated research laboratory in the United Kingdom, marking a significant expansion of its physical infrastructure in the region.
The Alphabet-owned company revealed the facility plans alongside a renewed agreement with the UK government.
Set to open in 2026, the lab will integrate with DeepMind’s Gemini AI models, utilising robotics to synthesise and test materials at a higher volume than manual research methods allow.
The facility will focus on materials science, specifically aiming to accelerate the development of new superconductors, battery components and semiconductors.
"AI has incredible potential to drive a new era of scientific discovery and improve everyday life," Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said.
"We’re excited to deepen our collaboration with the UK government and build on the country’s rich heritage of innovation to advance science, strengthen security, and deliver tangible improvements for citizens."
Safety partnership
The announcement coincides with a strengthened collaboration between DeepMind and the UK’s AI Security Institute (AISI).
Building on a testing arrangement from 2023, a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishes a framework for DeepMind to share data and technical information with the safety body.
The partnership will focus on joint research into risks associated with frontier AI, including monitoring AI reasoning and potential economic impacts.
Under the agreement, UK scientists will receive priority access to specialised tools such as AlphaFold for protein structures, and the government intends to pilot Gemini-based tools to assist civil servants with administrative tasks.

Just one day prior, Google’s quantum team claimed a major physics breakthrough with its Quantum Echoes experiment, demonstrating progress in how quantum information moves inside a processor.
While not a "break encryption today" moment, it’s a significant scientific flex that reinforces their hardware innovation growth - just as they commit to building physical labs in the UK.
On the software front, the deal follows the rollout of Gemini 2.5 updates earlier this week.
The new models feature enhanced "thinking" capabilities and improved text-to-speech, directly feeding into the "Gemini for Government" pilots mentioned in the UK deal.
Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) dipped 2.27% on the news to swap shares for US$313.70 by close of trade.
