BYD’s high-end subsidiary Denza will be the first automaker to introduce new ultra-fast charging technology to Australia when its new Z9 GT electric vehicle arrives, with the company showcasing the car at the Melbourne Motor Show today.
Denza launched in Australia 100 days ago, the most recent Australian entry of any brand at the event. The Z9 GT features Flash charging, which allows it to charge from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes.
“It’s about 5 minutes to get 500 kilometres,” said Denza Australia chief operating officer Mark Harland. “This is going to be world-class.”
BYD and Denza’s Flash chargers can deliver up to 1500 kilowatts to electric vehicles. Currently, Australia’s fastest chargers deliver 400 kW.
Denza was the first car brand to bring Flash charging to market in both China and Europe, and will now be the first to do so in Australia, Denza sales representative Mark Anton told Azzet. “And it’s not just because we’re the first, we’re also value for money,” said Anton.
The Z9 GT will arrive in Australia in 2026’s third quarter. Denza has not yet disclosed the vehicle’s retail price.
The vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100 km in 2.7 seconds. Its range under China’s more lenient CLTC standards is 820 km, with a range test under global WLTP standards still forthcoming.
Denza will start installing its Flash charging network at its flagship stores in cities like Melbourne, Perth, and Brisbane from 2026’s third quarter. It plans to eventually add Flash charging stations along major highways between cities, said Anton.
The company has also rapidly expanded its dealership network since its Australian launch. It began with four Australian dealerships in December, and will operate 16 by the end of the second quarter.
“There’s going to be another dealership opening soon in Melbourne and three more next year,” said Anton. Long-term, the brand aims to operate more Australian dealerships than Toyota-owned competitor Lexus, he said.
