Chinese smartphone company Honor will step up its artificial intelligence investment and integrate Google Gemini’s AI into its devices, as it seeks to make inroads with international buyers.
Honor, which separated from Huawei in 2020, hopes to invest over US$10 billion over the next five years into AI development for a wide range of devices under its Alpha Plan.
“It is clear that the AI revolution will reshape the paradigm of the device industry — completely transforming our productivity, our society, and even our culture more than ever before,” said Honor CEO James Li.
“I am calling on all of us to unite together to address the challenges — as well as the many opportunities — of AI technology. I also call on the industry to be truly open so that we can fully embrace this exciting AI future. Let's do it together.”
Honor’s Alpha Plan will see the company integrate agentic AI into its phones, develop an AI ecosystem for a variety of devices, and “open human potential boundaries and co-create a new paradigm for civilisation”.
Its new Honor UI Agent can read phones’ screens and use apps, and is powered by Google’s Gemini 2 model.
Honor also plans to collaborate with Google on AI image editing, with a new image enhancement feature powered by Snapdragon being rolled out from this month.
The company released its Magic Vs foldable smartphone outside of China this week, and is expected to launch a successor to its foldable Magic V Flip later this year.
It unveiled a new PC, tablet, smartwatch, and set of earbuds while showcasing its Alpha Plan in Barcelona today.
