China is preparing to launch its drone-carrying mothership. The aircraft has been touted as a game-changer in drone warfare, according to Chinese state media.
The Jiu Tian is a long-range unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that can transport weapons and equipment.
According to state media, the fourth prototype had completed its first structural assembly and was undergoing installation and testing over the weekend and will set off on its maiden flight next month as China boosts its air force capabilities.
The aircraft stands out from others due to its ability to launch around 100 smaller UAVs from its fuselage mid-flight. The drones are also able to be armed with air-to-air, antiship and air-to-ground missiles as well as 1000kg guided bombs.
The Jiu Tan is powered by a turbofan engine, allowing a range of 7000km and a maximum flying height of 15 kilometres.
The aircraft also has a 25-metre wingspan and can fly for 12 hours. It has a take-off weight of 16 tons and can transport a total of six tons.
Despite its impressive size, some observers said this could be a vulnerability and make it an easier target for missiles.
Archer Strategic Consulting United States military aviation expert, Tom Shugart, told Newsweek that while it’s an interesting concept, there are some drawbacks.
"I imagine in a high-end fight it could be subject to destruction by enemy aircraft or air defences before it got close enough to release those drones," he said.
"Definitely worth keeping an eye on its development, though."
