Australians are set to spend a record A$6.8 billion during the weekend from Black Friday to Cyber Monday, with sales kicking off today.
About 6 million Australians will participate in Black Friday sales this year, according to a survey by Roy Morgan and the Australian Retail Association (ARA).
“Black Friday has firmly cemented its place on Australia’s retail calendar — delivering critical cashflow to discretionary retailers and small businesses who’ve faced subdued consumer activity for the past two years,” according to ARA CEO Chris Rodwell.
“Shoppers are savvy and more deliberate — they’re waiting for big sales events like Black Friday to make larger purchases — but it’s not just about price. Australians are looking for value, reliability and a trusted retail experience.”
According to the survey, 66% plan to buy both gifts and items for themselves.
The average planned spending per person is $804. While men expect to spend more than women on Black Friday sales, at $882 to $750, women outnumber men participating, at 3.5 million to 2.5 million.
Black Friday sales are also growing more common with Australian retailers, with 44% set to take part. This is a 3% increase from 2024.
The ACCC has said that it will conduct a sweep of Black Friday sales to look for deceptive tactics from retailers, including misleading sales countdown timers and incorrect claims of storewide discounts.
As Australia begins its holiday shopping season, 84% of retailers expect stronger sales this year than in 2024, per a Deloitte report. Among consumers, 33% said they would spend more than in 2024.
Retailers projected half of their holiday revenue would stem from Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Click Frenzy sales earlier in November.
