Asia-Pacific markets traded mixed on Monday following modest declines on Wall Street on Friday, as investors assessed fresh economic data from Japan.
By 11:45 am AEST (1:45 am GMT), Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was down 0.2%, while Japan's Nikkei 225 edged 0.1% higher. South Korea's KOSPI 200 remained closed for a public holiday.
Among economic data releases, Japan's gross domestic product (GDP) expanded at an annualised rate of 1.1% in the second quarter, missing expectations for 2.0% growth as weaker domestic demand offset strong exports.
The result compared with 2.1% growth in the previous quarter.
On a year-on-year basis, Japan's economy expanded 0.7%, up from 0.5% in the first quarter.
Exports were the main driver of growth, with shipments exceeding expectations in each of the three months of the quarter.
However, the gains were partly supported by the weaker yen rather than simply an increase in shipment volumes.
In the United States on Friday, major benchmarks finished slightly lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.2%, the S&P 500 fell 0.2%, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.3%.
In commodities, ICE Brent crude finished 1.7% higher at US$88.52 a barrel on Friday, while spot gold gained 0.6% to settle at US$4,375.58 an ounce.
In China, the SSE Composite Index finished flat at 3,927.2 on Friday, while the CSI 300 edged 0.04% higher to 4,665.9.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index fell 1.1% to 25,116.9, while India's BSE Sensex remained closed for a public holiday.
European markets finished mixed on Friday. The UK's FTSE 100 slipped 0.2% to 10,750.1, while Germany's DAX gained 0.5% to a fresh record closing high of 26,440.3. France's CAC 40 finished 0.2% lower at 8,636.8.
