The 2028 ambitions of United States Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are in the spotlight after Zohran Mamdani's resounding victory.
Mamdani beat Andrew Cuomo in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary earlier this week. During his run for office, he was endorsed by Ocasio-Cortez.
As well as throwing her support behind Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, she joined him at campaign events as well, drawing in large crowds.
Ocasio-Cortez, 35, currently serves as a congresswoman for the Bronx and Queens, but her former spokesperson, Corbin Trent, told the NY Post that this mayoral victory “broadens her horizons” for 2028 and beyond.
“You can always count on her being underestimated for sure, that’s a given,” said Trent.
“[The mayoral primary result] gives her a little bit of a national victory, more national attention for going in the right direction and backing the right horse."
On the possibility of Ocasio-Cortez going after the seat of New York, held by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer since 1999, Corbin seemed confident.
“The polls say she would beat Schumer at primary," he said to the Post.
