Amazon will invest UK£40 billion (A$83.5 billion) into the United Kingdom over the next three years, which would see the company build a number of new sites and add thousands of jobs.
The company plans to open new fulfillment centres and delivery stations throughout the UK, as well as expand its offices in London.
“Amazon’s £40 billion investment adds another major win to Britain’s basket and is a massive vote of confidence in the UK as the best place to do business. It means thousands of new jobs—real opportunities for people in every corner of the country to build careers, learn new skills, and support their families,” said U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
“We now employ over 75,000 people and have become one of the UK's largest private sector employers and taxpayers,” according to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. “When Amazon invests, it’s not only in London and the South East – we’re bringing innovation and job creation to communities throughout England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, strengthening the UK’s economy and delivering better experiences for customers wherever they live."
Amazon will add 2,000 jobs each in new fulfilment centres in Hull and Northampton, it said, which will include roles for engineers and safety experts. Two other fulfillment centres will open in the East Midlands.
Its London corporate headquarters will add two new buildings, and Amazon will invest in original television and film productions.
The investment will add around UK£38 million to the U.K.’s GDP, Amazon estimates.
The company said in September that it would invest UK£8 billion in operating data centres in the U.K. from 2024 to 2028, parts of which will now be included in this £40 billion investment.
The U.K.’s Groceries Code Adjudicator agency launched an investigation into Amazon last week, saying it had “reasonable grounds to suspect” that Amazon had delayed paying its suppliers. The investigation will cover the period from March 2022 to June 2025.
Amazon’s share price closed at US$208.47, down from its previous close of $209.69. Its market capitalisation is $2.21 trillion.
