OpenAI announced that it will launch Chat GPT-5.2, which it claims to be its best offering for everyday professional use.
The model will be better than previous models at creating spreadsheets, building presentations, perceiving images, writing code and understanding long context, according to OpenAI.
“We designed 5.2 to unlock even more economic value for people,” OpenAI’s chief product officer, Fidji Simo, said.
The launch of a new model comes amid fierce competition with revival Google and its AI chatbot Gemini 3, which is topping LMArena’s leaderboard across almost all benchmarks.
Earlier this month, OpenAI's CEO released an internal “code red” to staff as ChatGPT’s traffic started to decline, creating concerns that it is losing its consumer market, according to The Information.
The “code red” led to a shift in priorities, including stalling on commitments like introducing ads and focusing on creating a better ChatGPT experience.
“We announced this code red to really signal to the company that we want to martial resources in one particular area, and that’s a way to really define priorities and define things that can be deprioritised,” Simo said.
ChatGPT-5.2 is a bid for the company to regain leadership, even as some employees called for the launch to be pushed back so the company could have more time to improve it.
While the AI giant said it would focus on creating a better consumer experience, the launch of GPT-5.2 looks to beef up its enterprise opportunities.
Altman said the release of Gemini 3 had less of an impact on the company’s metrics than originally anticipated and he expects OpenAI to exit “code red” by January.
