World leaders have congratulated Anthony Albanese on becoming the first Australian Prime Minister to win two successive elections in more than 20 years.
The Australian Labor Party (ALP) leader said he had received "warm" messages from world leaders, although United States President Donald Trump was not one of them.
Trump left it to Secretary of State Marco Rubio who said Australia was a valued ally, partner and friend of the United States with shared values and democratic traditions providing the bedrock for an enduring alliance and for deep ties between our peoples.
“The United States looks forward to deepening its relationship with Australia to advance our common interests and promote freedom and stability in the Indo-Pacific and globally,” Rubio said in a press release.
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the United Kingdom and Australia were as close as ever and would continue to work together on share ambitions in trade, investment and energy.
“Our collaborations on defence, especially the AUKUS programme, will continue to grow, and as fellow steadfast supporters of Ukraine, we will continue to stand together against Putin’s illegal war for as long as it takes,” Starmer said in a media release.
“The UK and Australia are as close as ever — and we will continue to work together to deliver a brighter future for working people in both of our countries.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine sincerely valued Australia’s unwavering support and principled stance on ending the war with Russia war and securing a dignified and lasting peace.
“I wish you continued success in serving the people of Australia and delivering meaningful achievements,” Zelensky wrote in a post on X.
“We look forward to further strengthening our productive partnership in pursuit of peace, security, and freedom.”
Support also came from New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon who said the two leaders affirmed the strong working relationship between the two countries when they spoke.
“New Zealand has no better friend and no greater ally than Australia,” Luxon said in a media release.
“I look forward to continuing to work with Mr Albanese on a range of issues including our shared security, partnering in the Pacific, and making the trans-Tasman business environment ever more seamless.”
