The Consumer Choice group has released its latest Australian supermarket prices report.
This is the second government funded annual report from Choice, and it found that once again Aldi was the cheapest option for shoppers.
The survey looked at the prices and specials on a basket of 14 popular winter products and pantry across four Australian supermarket chains; Coles, Woolworths, IGA and Aldi.
The basket included vegetable stock, apples, chicken, drinking hot chocolate, butternut pumpkins, oats, garlic, and onions, with prices surveyed at 104 supermarkets in 27 locations across the nation back in March.
Aldi came in at the top for price, with the basket costing $55.35 without specials, while Woolworths landed second place at $58.92.
Coles, without specials, came in at $59.22, and the IGA basket was $69.74.
“All up, if you're planning a hearty porridge breakfast, or wanting a cup of hot chocolate to keep you feeling snug, Aldi should be your first stop,” said Ashley de Silva, Choice CEO.
“But, as always, there are lots of other ways to save on your weekly grocery shop. Checking the unit pricing, keeping an eye on specials, shopping around, and trying out house brand products can all add up to significant savings.”
