Tomorrowland music festival stage destroyed by fire
The main stage at Belgium’s Tomorrowland music festival was destroyed by fire two days before the electronic music event’s first weekend was set to begin. Tomorrowland will still go ahead as planned, organisers said. The festival had estimated that 400,000 people would attend across Tomorrowland’s two weekends, on 18-20 July and 25-27 July. “Due to a serious incident and fire on the Tomorrowland Mainstage, our beloved Mainstage has been severely damaged,” wrote Tomorrowland. “We can confirm that no one was injured during the incident.” The fire began around 6 pm on Wednesday, local time. Its cause is currently unknown. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze before 8 pm, per the local newspaper Gazet Van Antwerpen, and left the site on Thursday morning. The festival’s main campsite will open near Antwerp on Thursday as previously planned, Tomorrowland said, with organisers set to decide on new scheduling and whether the remains of the stage will be demolished. All the main acts will still perform and additional events in Antwerp and Brussels will go ahead, according to Tomorrowland. Cargo ship carrying thousands of cars left to burn
A cargo ship carrying thousands of cars has been abandoned in the Pacific Ocean after catching on fire. The Morning Midas cargo ship was travelling from China to Mexico when it caught fire approximately 450 kilometres south of Alaska. The ship was transporting a reported total of 3,159 vehicles, with around 800 being electric, running on lithium ion batteries which when on fire are very difficult to extinguish. The United States Coast Guard Alaska Division was called to the scene of the burning ship by a distress call made on Tuesday afternoon, local time. Car ploughs into fans at Liverpool FC victory parade
A 53 year-old British man has been arrested after the car he was in ploughed into football fans celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League title victory. Reports from The Guardian say up to 47 people were injured including four children - one who remains in a critical condition. Emergency services swarmed to Water Street in the city centre after receiving calls just after 6pm local time as the parade was coming to a close. The driver, a caucasian 53-year-old man from the Liverpool area, was arrested by police at the scene. Authorities have stated that the incident is not being treated as terrorism as investigations continue into the man's motives or condition. Catholic conclave convenes to elect the next pope
The conclave to elect a new pope begins on 7 May at 10am (AEST) with a public holy mass at St Peter’s Basilica. The cardinals have already begun checking into hotels and are barred from the outside world as they decide who will succeed Pope Francis. After the mass, the cardinals will head to the Sistine Chapel, where all cardinals under 80 will cast their first vote for who will be the new leader of the 1.4 billion-member church. While some possible front-runners have been named, many of the 133 cardinals expected to vote said they don’t know who will be elected as the next pope. This year’s conclave is also set to be the most geographically diverse in the church’s history with speakers from 70 countries. The Conclave is likely to be spread out over multiple days, with the longest conclave lasting 1,006 days back in the 13th century. Recent conclaves have been shorter, lasting just two days in 2005 and 2013. There are multiple rounds of voting and to be elected the contender must win two-thirds of the vote to become pope. Tributes pour in as Pope Francis dies aged 88
Pope Francis, the leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics, has died at the age of 88 after suffering a stroke and cardiac arrest. Dozens killed in stampede at sacred Indian festival
Dozens of people have been killed in a stampede at India's Maha Kumbh Mela festival. Tens of millions of Hindus gathered in north India for the six-week festival, and on the most important day of the festival, went to swim in sacred river waters, under the belief that bathing in three sacred rivers absolves people of sins and brings salvation. Authorities had deployed additional security, medical personnel and with AI-software-based crowd management technology in response to the expected record 100 million people. Doomsday Clock now closest to midnight in its history
The Doomsday Clock has been moved one second closer to midnight, from 90 to 89, in response to multiple global threats. The clock was founded back in 1945 by Albert Einstein, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and University of Chicago scientists who had helped develop the first atomic weapons as part of the top secret Manhattan Project in WWII. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists created the Doomsday Clock, conveying the possibility of an apocalypse as midnight on the clock face and the time is then set by the Bulletin’s Science and Security Board, last done in January 2023. Clock factors for the time setting in 2025 include nuclear weapons, climate change, artificial intelligence, infectious diseases, and conflicts in both Ukraine and the Middle East. 'Apocalyptic': Scores die in Turkish resort hotel fire
A fire has killed at least 76 people and injured another 51 after engulfing a ski resort in Türkiye's Bolu mountains. The fire broke out at the 12-storey Grand Kartal Hotel in Kartalkaya at 3:27 local time (12:27 am GMT), where 238 guests were reportedly staying during a busy holiday period. Ali Yerlikaya, Turkish Interior Minister said 45 of the dead have been identified while efforts to identify the other victims were continuing. “We are in deep pain,” said Yerlikaya. Turkish health minister, Kemal Memişoğlu, also said at least one of the people injured was in a serious condition and that 17 others had been discharged from hospital. The cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed by authorities, however, initial reports have suggested that it began on the fourth floor of the hotel in the restaurant. Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunç, said on X, four people, including the hotel owner, have been detained over the incident as a part of the investigation.
