Most Australians have cast their votes for this year's election. Now what?
For Federal election 2025, voting is available on the day at more than 7,000 polling places across the nation, and early voting was open from 22 April.
This year saw a record turn out of early voters, but that does not mean those votes will be counted first.
Polling on election day runs from 8:00 am until 6:00 pm local time, wherever voters live, and if they're in the queue at 6:00 pm they can still vote.
Millions of votes will be counted by Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) workers who, as of 4:00 pm, are allowed to open the boxes, open the votes and start sorting.
The AEC does not declare winners for a week and a half but projections are used by experts and the media to predict a winner when they are confident to do so.
A precise time can never be known for the results, but veteran election analyst Antony Green says we will "probably know by 10 o'clock”.
However, things can move faster and be called earlier, with the last Federal election called by Green at 9:00 pm and and the 2019 election at 9:30 pm.
Green will begin his analysis from 5:30 pm on the ABC, his final year covering elections on screen after doing so since 1991.
