Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen has announced that face masks and certain flags will be banned at protests, as part of a fleet of new changes.
Speaking to the press to make the announcement Allan confirmed that the new legislation was in response to antisemitic attacks in Melbourne, earlier this month.
Her government will look to introduce the legislation, which will ban the display of flags and symbols of listed terrorist organisations in public.
This includes Palestinian militant group Hamas, Lebanese militia Hezbollah and also applies to white national extremists and radical racist right-wing groups.
Facemasks and balaclavas at protests will face the ban as well, due to protestors using them to conceal their identities, Allan said.
They will also consider blocking protests outside places of worship via safe zones.
"Today, the government of Victoria renews its promise to Jewish people and to everyone of every background, whoever you are and whoever you pray to, you deserve to be safe and welcome here in this state," Allan said to reporters. “Today we support that promise with strong action, strong action to fight hate and help Victorians heal.”
