The United States has further restricted China’s access to technology components for AI and chip tools.
The Department of Commerce introduced the restraints on Monday (Tuesday AEDT), on the sale of high-bandwidth memory chips made by U.S. and foreign companies, components that handle data storage and are essential for AI.
This is the third restriction in three years on China’s semiconductor industry, with 140 companies to see restrictions on exports.
The package includes restriction on China-bound shipments of high bandwidth memory chips, which are essential for the applications of AI training, new curbs on 24 further chipmaking tools, three software tools, and new export restrictions on chipmaking equipment manufactured in countries including Singapore and Malaysia.
It marks one of the final large scale moves for the the Biden administration against China’s ability to access and produce chips.
It comes just weeks before President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn in, with his government expected to uphold many of the previous administrations measures sanctioning China.
