Turkey's foreign minister and Syria's new leader have met in Damascus, where they both called for the lifting of all international sanctions against Syria following the recent fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime.
Turkish FM Hakan Fidan and Syria’s de facto ruler Ahmed al-Sharaa met in Syria's capital city on Sunday, where they both placed emphasis on a need for stability and support as Syria faces its post-Assad political transition.
Fidan called on sanctions placed on Syria to be must be lifted “as soon as possible” and for the international community "to mobilise to help Syria get back on its feet and for the displaced people to return”.
Videos and photos shared by the Turkish ministry showed Fidan and al-Sharaa share a hug and shake hands, before settling down to discuss a range of topics, including necessity of drafting a new constitution for the country, that protects Syrian minorities and the issue of Syrian refugees.
This meeting meeting and display of support came two days after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Fidan would be going to Damascus and amidst growing military tensions along the northern Syria-Turkey border.
