A new report from United States special counsel Jack Smith has concluded that President-Elect Donald Trump engaged in an "unprecedented criminal effort" after losing the 2020 election.
The report covers Smith's four-count indictment brought against Trump, outlining a plot to obstruct the collection and certification of votes following his 2020 election loss.
The cases never reached a trial and Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Smith dropped his cases against Trump after he won the 2024 election, citing a Justice Department policy against prosecuting a sitting president.
However, the new report concluded that the evidence would have been enough to convict Trump at trial.
Much of the evidence cited in the report has been previously made public but a second section of the report details Smith's case accusing Trump of illegally retaining sensitive national security documents after his departure from the White House.
The Justice Department will not make that portion public while legal proceedings continue against two Trump associates also charged in the case.
